Full of racy puppets and boisterous songs, "Avenue Q" is a hilarious look at life in New York City, in a world populated by both people and puppets. The lovable cast includes characters made of both flesh and felt: recent college grad Princeton, who moves to the low-rent Avenue Q full of hope for the future and befriends Kate, the girl-monster next door, Rod, the Republican internet "sexpert," and other colorful neighbors who help Princeton discover his true purpose in life. While the show draws inspiration from "Sesame Street", you'll want to leave the kiddos at home for this one -- these puppets have quite the mouths on them, and there's even some "full puppet nudity." From the moment you enter Bass Hall, you'll be catapulted into a haunting world where issues of morality and madness, vengeance and violence play out against stark imagery of Soviet-era society. Director Thaddeus Strassberger has brilliantly transported Ambroise Thomas' original 1868 opera "Hamlet" from Elsinore to a totalitarian regime reminiscent of Cold War-era Russia. Yet the core of Shakespeare's tragedy -- in which Hamlet, the melancholy prince of Denmark, struggles to avenge his father's murder while his betrothed, Ophelia, fights to maintain her sanity -- remains as psychologically rich and deeply poetic as ever in this mesmerizing Fort Worth Opera production that features jaw-dropping set design and Thomas' emotive score performed live by the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. "Hamlet" stars baritone Wes Mason ("Before Night Falls") in the title role, with Kim Joesphson ("Falstaff") portraying the lecherous Claudius and Talise Trevigne taking on the challenging role of Ophelia in her FWOpera debut. A scandal when it first debuted, Giuseppe Verdi's "La Traviata" went on to become the composer's most popular opera. Featuring some of the world's best known operatic moments, this bittersweet love story is a glorious depiction of opulent lifestyles in 19th-century Paris. "La Traviata" tells the grand story of the beautiful, pleasure-loving but frail courtesan Violetta Valéry, who unexpectedly finds true love with a younger man, resulting in tragic consequences. Verdi's vivid portrait of the decadence of Parisian society features exquisite arias like the first act's finale "Sempre Libera" and the mournful "Addio del passato." This timeless love story will play out against Verdi's rich orchestration and features a cast of fresh faces all making their Fort Worth Opera debuts in this traditionally staged production. [less-]

As effervescent as a bottle of Dom Pérignon, "The Liar" leaves audiences tipsy with laughter. Love, lies and sex fizz in this bubbly French masterpiece from Pierre Corneille who, in addition to being one of the great French dramatists, was the 17th-century equivalent of a stand-up superstar. In his sublime comedy, Dorante, a charming, handsome pathological liar, has come to Paris in search of pleasure. He falls head over heels for the beautiful Clarice, but mistakes her name for that of her best friend, Lucrece. After lying his way into a world of trouble, can Dorante lie his way back out again? Broadway playwright David Ives' English-language adaptation piles on the wordplay, with rhyming couplets, witty allusions and puns by the metric ton. Let yourself be carried away by "The Liar", a charming, dizzying treat from Theatre Three. [less-]
